The Great Bathtub Debacle

This week has been a pretty slow week so far... or atleast it was until we had a client call to tell us the bathtub she ordered for her master bath remodel was too big... and the excitement begins....

Wednesday morning we got a call from a client that we are remodeling a bathroom for that she ordered the wrong tub. This was supposed to be a quick easy remodel that would take less then a week.... but now it's going to take longer and it's going to be more costly. So my lesson of the week is that tubs are not returnable or exchangeable and there are apparently a lot of different types of them. The tub the client currently has is about 71" long and has a right drain. The tub she bought is 72" and has a center drain. We gave her the dimensions of the tub, and she order one inch too big.... Then people at the plumbing store didn't even ask her what type of drain she had...

So we had to figure out what do about this situation. Her options were to: buy a new tub (which is not cheap) and return the one she has, which is non-refundable and she would have to pay a 25% restocking fee; or she could have the plumber move the drain, which means he would have to jack hammer the slab and re-pour that area, and then cut into the sheet rock to fit the tub. Both options will cost the client more money then her original quote. After doing some math and making a few phone calls, Ellen decided that she would make the "executive decision" to have the plumber move the drain. It would only be a couple hundred dollars verses the couple thousand it would cost to buy a new tub but now the job will take longer... The client left town for the week so that she wouldn’t have to be near the ruckus.... that didn't work out so well....

The lesson of this week is ALWAYS communicated with clients and retailers should pay more attention to what they are selling. When everyone does their job correctly then everything will smoothly but when people don't... bad things happen....
