WEEK 7

This week has been consisted of allot of collaboration. We have been working mostly on Ellen's new house. Jessica and me have been working on elevations of rooms that have cabinets in them. We have been hand drafting them (yikes!) because we don’t do any CAD work here.... yeah that's right no CAD. ALL by hand.

We don't do very many large projects, mostly small remodels... these don't require extensive planning. For Ellen's house, we have been working with the draftsman that drew her plans so make changes. We have worked a little in CAD for Laurens house because she had huge changes to make. I have done some plan in Revit or them but other then that mostly everything is by hand. The only computer program they use in sketch up when they need a better visual to how the client so that they can better understand.

Anyways... I've gotten a chance to improve on my sketching and hand drafting! Especially this week; I’ve been working with Ellen to understand her ideas for her house. She has a HUGE binder full of magazine clippings and picture printed from houzz and pinterest that she's been saving for years. It's like a prehistoric pinterest board! She shows me pictures of ideas she wants in her house and I combine them all into one drawing. Right now we are trying to decide on window heights so she can tell the framer, and cabinet sizes and placement for the cabinet guy. We've drawn every cabinet and are working on figuring out where the trash will go, how many drawers on the wet bar, accurate size cubby to fit her purse in the mudroom, how tall the cabinets will be in the in the kitchen. There's so much that goes into deciding each one. It all depends upon how these areas will be used and Jessica and me are the one asking the questions and helping her decide what to get. Studying how someone works in their space makes designing so much easier then blindly trying to figure out what they want. If only we could have real clients to ask questions to on school projects! Collaboration is the biggest part of the residential industry because everyone has different likes and needs to design around.
